Lanna Resources Public Company Limited (Lanna), formerly known as Lanna Lignite, was founded in October 1985, after having received a concession to operate a lignite mine at Ban Pa Kha in Lamphun province, Thailand. It subsequently opened another domestic mine at Nong Ya Plong in Petchaburi province. The company was listed in the Stock Exchange of Thailand in July 1994.
In its expanding of coal production to overseas resources, Lanna founded Lanna (Singapore) Pte Ltd. as its investment holding arm in overseas coal mining business. The first investment was in PT Lanna Harita Indonesia (55%), together with PT Harita Mahakam Mining of Indonesia (35%) and Pan United Corp. of Singapore (10%). Since then, Lanna has successfully expanded to two other mining companies; PT Citra Harita Minerals (55%) and PT Singlurus Pratama (65%), in recent years.
Lanna also joined with Pan United Corp. and formed a joint-venture company in shipping business, United Bulk Shipping Pte Ltd. The operations are mainly to support its coal transportation logistics to ensure reasonable and effective costs for the expanding base of customers, both in Thailand and overseas.
In 2003, Lanna entered into a diversified business in alternative energy and invested in bio-fuel ethanol production plant, using molasses, established under Thai Agro Energy Public Company Limited, of which it currently holds 75% equity interest. The plant is currently producing more than 150,000 liters of 99.5% ethanol a day, or 55 million liters per annum since its startup commissioning in January 2005.
With both its core and diversified energy businesses expanding rapidly, Lanna has positioned the company to face the energy challenge of the coming decade for Thailand, and has played its role as one of the regional energy providers, in its quest for prosperity together with ASEAN region and beyond.
