KIS International School is a place where children love to learn. The campus is inviting, the teachers are enthusiastic and involved, and the curriculum encourages a yearning for education.
The spirit of KIS starts with the strong sense of community on the green and spacious campus, close to the centre of town. The school is well-equipped with libraries, playgrounds, an arts centre, a 500 seat auditorium, tennis courts, laboratories, games pitches, a swimming pool and so on. The facilities are specifically designed to accommodate the IB programmes.
KIS Teachers play a vital role in encouraging students’ desire to learn. A group of vibrant, supportive and above all, exceptional educators, KIS teachers not only support the IB programme, but they are also trained by IB. In fact some teachers are IB trainers, and Head of School, Sally Holloway is on the IB Regional Heads Representative Committee (RHRC), Asia Pacific.
The curriculum at KIS follows the internationally recognized International Baccalaureate programmes, where students are informed with a world perspective in history, literature, geography, mathematics, the arts, technology, and the sciences. It is not hard to see why children following this programme love to learn- the IB programme is inquiry based and inter-disciplinary. This means that that children learn to make connections between subjects, link what they learn to the real world and reflect and act on their experiences. There are several projects where students need to demonstrate these skills, such as the Primary Years Programme (PYP) Exhibition, where grade 5 students examine and propose solutions to a real life issue; the Middle Years Programme (MYP) personal project, a year-long piece of work, on almost any subject, that the students create and process to completion; and the extended essay, for IB diploma students, where the students do research and complete a thesis-like essay on their findings. All of these projects give the children hands-on experience in real situations. There is no better way to stimulate their interest and to develop their curiosity.
More hands-on experience can be found in helping others. Both the IB programme and KIS are very community minded, and community service forms a significant part of life at KIS. Students experience helping orphans, planting trees, working with tsunami survivors and so on.
It’s not hard to understand that with such encouragement, children at KIS love coming to school and are eager to learn.
